NNPCL: Why power generation may drop

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited has revealed that some power generation companies may experience reduced gas availability due to Seplat Energy Plc’s scheduled four-day routine maintenance on its gas production facilities.

Seplat Energy Plc is a key supplier of gas into the NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company Limited (NGIC) pipeline network.

In a statement on Thursday, Andy Odeh, NNPC spokesperson, said the national oil firm said the maintenance by its joint venture (JV) partner will take place from February 12 to February 15.

“This planned activity forms part of standard industry safety and asset integrity protocols designed to ensure the continued reliability, efficiency, and safe operation of critical gas infrastructure,” NNPC said.

“Periodic maintenance of this nature is essential to sustain optimal system performance, strengthen operational resilience, and minimise the risk of unplanned outages.”

During the four-day maintenance period, NNPC said there will be a temporary drop in gas supply into the NGIC pipeline network.

As a result, the company said “some power generation companies reliant on this supply may experience reduced gas availability, which could modestly impact electricity generation levels within the timeframe”.

“NNPC Ltd and Seplat Energy are working closely to ensure that the maintenance is executed safely and completed as scheduled,” the statement reads.

“In parallel, the refinery said NNPC Gas Marketing Limited (NGML) is engaging alternative gas suppliers to mitigate anticipated supply gaps and maintain stability across the network.

“Upon completion of the maintenance exercise, full gas supply into the NGIC system is expected to resume promptly, enabling affected power generation companies to return to normal operations.”

The company said it will share additional information with the public when appropriate
