Terror again returned to Yelwata community in Benue State when gunmen opened fire on residents in the early hours of Monday.

According to reports, the latest attack triggered a protest by women in the community, demanding that security operatives stationed in the area be withdrawn for lack of efficiency.

Local residents have also asked the state government to relocate them to Makurdi, the state capital, for fear of their lives.

“They should take us to Makurdi because the government cannot protect us,” one protester was quoted as saying.

The latest wave of attack comes just within two months after gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen, unleashed mayhem on the community, killing up to 200 people, with the incident complicating the Interally Displaced Persons (IDPs) crisis in the state.

President Bola Tinubu swiftly dispatched security agencies to the community after the attack. He visited the state after criticism by Nigerians online but was unable to enter Yelwata due to flood.

The casualty figure from Monday’s attack is not yet known.
