Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has said he will willingly step aside for Peter Obi if the former Anambra governor emerges presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, in 2027.
As the countdown to the 2027 presidential election approaches, Atiku and Obi are seen as the front runners for ADC’s presidential ticket.
Former Kano governo and one time minister of defence Rabiu Kwankwaso and former Rivers State Governor and minister of Transportation under the administration of late president Muhammadu Buhari, Rotimi Amaechi, are also thought to be in the running for the ADC presidential ticket.
Speaking in an interview on Arise News Atiku was asked if he would step down for Obi, if the former Labour Party presidential candidate gets the ADC ticket, he said, “Yes, I will step aside for any winner.”
Asked if “any winner includes Peter Obi”, Atiku said, “Of course, if he is a contender, why not?”
Further pressed if it would not be difficult for him to do so as Obi was his vice presidential running mate, Atiku stated that, “What is difficult there? It is democracy. It is either you go through consensus or you go through election. You emerge through consensus or emerge through the electoral process.”
President Bola Tinubu has been endorsed as the standard bearer of the ruling All Progressives Congress in the 2027 presidential election, holding January 2027.
The Peoples Democratic Party and the ADC are yet to pick their candidates for the next presidential election, which political watchers see as a political litmus test for the current political gladiators.
