Real Madrid and Morocco winger Brahim Diaz has issued a heartfelt apology to fans following a missed penalty in the AFCON final against Senegal, a moment that ultimately cost Morocco the title.
In a post shared via Fabrizio Romano on Monday, Diaz expressed the depth of his disappointment, writing:
“My soul hurts. I dreamed of this title thanks to all the love you all gave me, every message, every show of support that made me feel I wasn’t alone. I fought with everything I had, with my heart above all else.”
He took full responsibility for the miss, saying:
“Yesterday I failed and I take full responsibility. I apologise from the bottom of my heart.”
Diaz acknowledged the difficulty of moving forward, calling the experience a wound that doesn’t heal easily. Yet he emphasised his determination to persevere, not just for himself but for the fans and his fellow Moroccans:
“I will keep going forward until one day I can give you all this love back and become a source of pride for my Moroccan people.”
