The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has condemned the decision of the Rivers State House of Assembly to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

The ruling party described the decision as “choreographed legislative coup d’état”.

The party urged the Chief Judge of the State, Simeon Amadi, to comply with an interim court injunction stopping him from receiving any impeachment move against the governor.

The injunction bars the judge from receiving or acting on any resolution from the state house of assembly regarding the impeachment of Siminalayi Fubara, governor of Rivers.

During Friday’s plenary in the state’s legislature, Martins Amaewhule, speaker of the house, asked the chief judge to constitute a seven-member panel to probe allegations of gross misconduct against Fubara and Ngozi Odu, his deputy.

The lawmakers accused the governor of treating the house with contempt and ignoring appeals for resolution.

A Rivers state high court, presided over by F. A. Fiberesima, had issued the interim injunction on the same day, restraining the speaker, the clerk, and the chief judge from proceeding with any impeachment-related actions.

The order, arising from suits marked OYHC/7/CS/2026 and related filings, barred the chief judge from receiving, considering, or acting on any impeachment documents for seven days.

The matter was adjourned to January 23, 2026, for hearing of the motion on notice.

In a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Saturday, Darlington Nwauju, APC publicity secretary in Rivers, described the assembly’s push to impeach the governor as a “choreographed legislative coup d’état” that undermines the party’s collective interest in the state.

Nwauju, whose faction aligns with Rotimi Amaechi, former minister of transportation, said most of the lawmakers, despite pledging loyalty to the APC and President Bola Tinubu, had opted for a “needless overreach”.

He warned that the move risks embarrassing the party and threatening its survival in Rivers.

“We have painstakingly analysed the issues leading up to the latest step taken by members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to proceed with the impeachment process,” the statement reads.

“Regrettably, we note that honourable members who trumpeted loyalty to our party and Mr President have now given themselves to a choreographed legislative coup d’état against the collective interest, growth and development of our party in the state.”

He urged the APC national leadership to invoke internal mechanisms under Article 21(b)(iii) of the party’s 2022 constitution to intervene and avert further crisis.

“This unfortunate path chosen by the legislative arm therefore serves as a dangerous footnote to the health and survival of the APC in Rivers State,” he added.
