Arsenal 4-1 Aston Villa: Rampant Gunners Send Message to Title Rivals

Arsenal sent a powerful message to their title rivals with a devastating 4–1 victory over Aston Villa at the Emirates Stadium, capping off 2025 in emphatic fashion.

Villa arrived in north London on the back of a record-breaking 11-game winning run, but Arsenal’s ruthless second-half performance ended that streak in spectacular style.

Despite missing midfield anchor Declan Rice, the Gunners showed resilience and quality to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League.
The return of Gabriel Magalhães proved pivotal.

His partnership with William Saliba has been flawless this season, and once again Arsenal looked secure with the duo at the back.

Villa striker Ollie Watkins threatened early, firing three shots in the opening 18 minutes, but he squandered a golden chance that might have changed the game.

Arsenal themselves started sluggishly, completing just 126 passes in the first half-hour, their lowest tally at home this season. But momentum shifted after the break, particularly when Villa lost Amadou Onana to injury, compounding the absence of suspended midfielder Boubacar Kamara.

From then on, Arsenal took control. Gabriel opened the scoring from a corner, continuing the Gunners’ remarkable set-piece record, 17 goals from corners in 2025, just one shy of Manchester United’s all-time calendar-year record.

The Brazilian defender now boasts 19 Premier League goals since joining Arsenal, more than any other defender in that period.

Martín Zubimendi doubled the lead after Martin Ødegaard’s relentless pressing created the opening. Leandro Trossard added a third with a thunderous strike from the edge of the box, finishing the year as Arsenal’s top scorer with 10 league goals.

Substitute Gabriel Jesus then struck within a minute of coming on, assisted by Trossard, who ends 2025 with a team-high 19 goal involvements.

Watkins grabbed a late consolation, but it was too little, too late. Arsenal’s victory moved them six points clear of Villa and five ahead of Manchester City. Opta’s supercomputer boosted their title chances from 65.8% before kick-off to 72% at full-time.
