The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has deployed a Deputy Commissioner of Police and tactical assets to find the armed Robbers involved in the incident that led to the death of Arise News journalist and producer, Somtochukwu Maduagwu.
Maduagwu died in the early hours of Monday after armed robbers said to be numbering 14, invaded her compound which contains several block of flats in the Katampe area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja.
The former beauty pageant and lawyer-turned journalist was said to have jumped from her top floor apartment when the robbers breached security.
Speaking on Arise News programme, The Morning Show, on Wednesday, monitored by Jes News, the Commissioner of Police in the FCT, Adewale Ajao sympathised with the media company and Nigerians over Maduagwu’s death.
Ajao claimed that his men responded to as soon as the distressed call reached the control room.
The police commissioner said police took the deceased to the hospital when they discovered her unconscious body on the ground after arriving at the scene of the robbery.
“Regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident, to set the record straight, some hoodlums, armed robbers specifically gained access into unique apartments where Sommie lived. A twin-three-storey eight-flat apartment Katampe under Mabushi divisional area. At this point in time, two guards were on duty, security men and one of them who had the courage to challenge, sustained a gun shot. Under this condition, you know the panic that would have ensued in this environment,” he said.
“Sommie actually occupied an apartment on the topmost floor of the building and out of the fear, she jumped down. The consequences is what we are seeing. It is so sad, so unfortunate. At last, a distress call was made to the command’s control room. Policemen moved to the scene, what they could see was the unconscious body of Sommie on the floor, they picked her and took her to Maitama General Hospital where the doctor on duty tried as much as possible to see whether they could resuscitate her using the CPR, but unfortunately, she couldn’t make it.”
The FCT police boss promised that his men will do everything possible to bring the perpetrators of the crime to justice.
“The investigation, headed by the deputy commissioner of police, with all the tactical components required to unravel the situation, with a view to tracking down the culprits responsible for this dastardly act. The names we are getting, we are already working on it. No stone will be left unturned to ensure that the perpetrators are tracked and brought to justice and the result of the investigation will be made known to Nigerians.”
President Bola Tinubu, First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, and several governors have all commiserated with Maduagwu’s family and Arise News over the incident.
