The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has suspended its industrial action.
The NARD had commenced a five-day warning nationwide strike on Friday, crippling medical serives at public hospitals across the country.
According to TheCable, Tope Osundara, NARD President, revealed on Sunday that the doctors are expected to resume work immediately.
“The strike has been suspended,” Osundara was quoted as saying in a telephone conversation.
“Some of our demands have been met. The government has promised to look into other issues.
“We did this as a sign of goodwill and to assist Nigerians who are seeking healthcare in our various facilities.”
Osundara added that the resident doctors will review the Federal Government’s response to their remaining demands.
He said the demands “not yet seeking immediate attention” include unpaid arrears and the downgrading of membership certificates from the West African Colleges of Physicians and Surgeons by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria.
The NARD president said the other demands are manpower shortage and the immediate release of the corrected circular on remuneration for doctors from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC).
