Boxing Day football takes on a different look this year, with just one Premier League fixture scheduled, a rarity in the competition’s history.
Manchester United host Newcastle United at Old Trafford in a clash between two sides with very different Boxing Day records. United boast the most wins on this date in Premier League history (22), while Newcastle have suffered the joint-most defeats (16).
United enter the game on the back of a 2–1 defeat to Aston Villa, undone by two moments of brilliance from Morgan Rogers. More worrying for Ruben Amorim’s side was the injury to Bruno Fernandes, who appeared to suffer a hamstring problem.
His absence could prove pivotal: United have lost six of the seven league matches he has missed since 2022. Fernandes has been central to their attacking play, involved in more open-play shot-ending sequences than any other player in the league this season.
Newcastle, meanwhile, squandered a two-goal lead against Chelsea in their last outing, with Nick Woltemade’s first-half double cancelled out in a 2–2 draw. Despite inconsistency, Eddie Howe’s side remain competitive in Europe and the EFL Cup, and victory here could lift them into the top half of the table, potentially leapfrogging United.
United’s form has been steady if unspectacular, with only two defeats in their last 11 matches. They remain in contention for European qualification, though Opta’s supercomputer gives them just a 5.6% chance of finishing in the top four.
Their upcoming fixtures against Wolves, Leeds and Burnley offer opportunities to build momentum, but the Boxing Day clash could set the tone for their festive run.
Matheus Cunha has emerged as a bright spot for United, scoring in consecutive league games after a slow start. His attacking numbers are among the best in the squad, and he will be relied upon to shoulder responsibility in Fernandes’ absence.
Newcastle, for their part, have Anthony Gordon in form with four goals and two assists in his last six appearances, while Woltemade has seven league goals in his debut campaign, joining an elite list of German forwards to make an immediate impact in England.
Head-to-head history favours United, who have won all three of their Boxing Day meetings with Newcastle. Yet the Magpies did the double over United last season, including a 2–0 win in this exact fixture.
They have not won consecutive visits to Old Trafford since 1935, but recent results suggest they are capable of upsetting the odds.
