Nollywood actor and skitmaker, Adebowale “Debo” Adedayo, better known as Mr Macaroni, posted a message on social media on Monday, marking the fifth year of the #EndSARS protests across the country which eventually turned fatal.
Nigerian youths, particularly those in the south, trooped to the streets for several days to protest the highhandedness of now-defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) arm of the Nigeria Police Force.
After the president Muhammadu Buhari-led administration scrapped SARS, which was part of the demands of the protsters, the demonstrations quickly moved to demanding better living conditions for Nigerians and police officers.
Youth blocked the highways across the nation, including Lagos, the epicentre of the protests. However, it turned ugly on October 20, 2020, when soldiers opened fire on innocent and harmless protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos where many died and some are unaccounted for till today.
Mr Macaroni was one of the celebrities who led the protests and showed solidarity with suffering youths.
In a post on his Facebook page, the actor said the day will be remembered forever.
“Nigerian Youths lost their lives, jobs, families and dreams at the hands of the most corrupt and evil People we call Leaders!!! Even though some of us are deeply in love with our Oppressors, this day 20/10/2020 is never to be forgotten nor forgiven!” he said.
Despite damning evidences and reports by international media organisations such as CNN and Al Jazeera, the Nigerian government denied that youths were killed at the Lekki toll gate.
