Vice-President, Kashim Shettima, has left Abuja for Belém in Brazil, to represent President Bola Tinubu at the leaders’ summit ahead of the 30th session of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30).
The high-level meeting, convened by Brazil President, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, in collaboration with global partners, will take place from November 6 to 7 in Belém, the capital of Pará state, located in the Brazilian Amazon.
The main COP30 negotiations, scheduled to be held from November 10 to 11, will bring together heads of state, development partners, and business executives to discuss practical pathways for accelerating global climate action.
This year’s conference, themed ‘Climate action and implementation’, will focus on adaptation, forests, biodiversity, and climate justice.
In a statement on Tuesday by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (office of the vice-president), said Shettima is expected to deliver Nigeria’s national statement during the plenary session.
He will also outline the country’s climate priorities and ongoing efforts to meet its commitments under international climate agreements.
After his engagements in Belém, Shettima will travel to Brasília for a reciprocal visit to his Brazilian counterpart, Geraldo Alckmin, who paid a three-day working visit to Nigeria earlier in June.
