Family and relatives of Nollywood actress, Regina Daniels, in Ogwashi-Uku community in Delta State, have issued a 48-hour ultimatum to her estranged husband, Ned Nwoko, to accept the bride price he paid for her marriage or risk a traditional declaration formally ending the union.
The demand was contained in an open letter signed by Favour Awele Obi on behalf of the community, accusing Nwoko, a senator, of “disregarding local customs” and allegedly using his political influence to intimidate members of Regina’s family.
According to the kinsmen, their tradition allows any woman to end her marriage as long as her family returns the bride price.
They alleged that multiple attempts to return the payment had been turned down by Nwoko, warning that if he rejects it again, the money would be publicly placed at Ikeleke Quarter a symbolic act that, under Ogwashi-Uku custom, signifies the dissolution of the marriage.
The letter also condemned the reported arrest of Regina’s siblings, describing it as an act of oppression.
It added that Regina’s family is calling for the immediate release of the detained individuals.
