The increasing airstrikes in the Gulf States occasioned by the joint military airstrikes by US and Israel against Iran has compelled some Nigerians residing in Qatar, United Arab Emirates, and Iran to make enquiries about possible evacuation amid rising tensions in the region.
This much was disclosed by Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, NIDCOM, which said “several Nigerians have reached out for guidance”, seeking clarification on whether the Federal Government has plans to evacuate citizens if the situation worsens.
NIDCOM, noted that it has not gotten any official distress calls from Nigerians in Iran, stating that evacuation may be tough at the moment because of light restrictions and security concerns.
NIDCOM said that ongoing hostilities and the suspension of international flights in affected areas could hinder immediate evacuation efforts, noting that “such operations would depend largely on improved security conditions”.
The commission appealed to Nigerians in the affected nations to rstaycalm, stay in safe locations, and maintain regular contact with Nigerian embassies for updates and necessary guidance.
NIDCOM also harped on the Federal Government’s commitment to protecting Nigerians abroad, assuring that necessary steps would be taken if the situation escalates further.
