Lionel Messi has revealed that he hopes to defend Argentina’s FIFA World Cup title in 2026 — but only if he’s physically fit and able to contribute meaningfully.
Speaking in an interview with NBC News, the Inter Miami CF captain emphasized that his decision will depend entirely on his condition during preseason next year.
‘Well, the truth is that yes, it’s something extraordinary to be able to be in a World Cup,’ Messi said. ‘And I would like to be there. To feel well and to be an important part of helping my national team, if I am there.’
Messi, who led Argentina to victory in Qatar in 2022, has maintained a cautious stance about his participation in the next tournament. He reiterated that he will assess his fitness day by day and only commit if he feels he can perform at the highest level.
‘I’m trying to feel good and, above all, being honest with myself,” he said. “When I feel good, I enjoy it, but when I don’t, honestly, I don’t have a good time, so I prefer not to be there if I don’t feel good.’
With the 2026 World Cup just over six months away, Messi’s decision remains one of the most anticipated storylines in international football.
