Nigerians have criticised Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen after confronting Ademola Lookman in Nigeria’s 4-0 victory over Mozambique at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in the Round of 16 on Monday.
Goals from Lookman, a brace from Osimhen himself and a late goal by Akor Adams sealed Nigeria’s and the biggest win at the competition by any team so far.
However, with Nigeria being three goals up, the Galatasaray attacker walked up to Lookman after the Eagles had won a corner kick, accusing him of selfish play.
The ex-Napoli star could be heard telling Lookman: “It is a team game, you understand. Lookman had a hand in Osimhen’s first goal and provided the assist for the second. Coach Eric Chelle subbed off Osimhen who was still livid minutes after the confrontation.
Reacting to the incident, Nigerian football fans advised the former African footballer of the year to work on his temperament.
Dagaci Abdullahi Aliyu said: “Imagine say nah ur opponents come dey sepetrate you from your own teammate.”
To add comedy to the issue, Norman Skillful Tor wrote: “Osimhen is behaving like Wike.”
However, Samuel Amos suggested that Lookman deserved the caution:
“For me, Lookman started wasting chances when Osimhen and Akor were free to receive his good passes. The shout made him correct himself.”
A disappointed fan said: “Fool, Lookman sabi pass you.”
Another fan, Adeolawale Sunday, backed Osimhen’s furious reaction against Lookman: “Osimhen is absolutely right by warning his teammate. Don’t waste any opportunity.”
Usama Yahuza wrote: “And this person is behind his goals. Just imagine.”
Nigeria will face the winner of Algeria and DRC clash in the quarter-finals.
