Pep Guardiola voiced his frustration with referee Farai Hallam after Manchester City’s 2-0 Premier League victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Etihad Stadium.
Despite goals from Omar Marmoush and Antoine Semenyo securing a much-needed win for City, Guardiola’s post-match comments were dominated by criticism of Hallam, who was officiating his first top-flight game.
The controversy arose when Hallam was advised by VAR to review a potential handball by Wolves defender Yerson Mosquera. After consulting the pitchside monitor, the referee decided against awarding a penalty, a decision that left Guardiola visibly irritated.
Speaking to reporters, the City boss remarked: “The referee made his debut, now everybody will know him. It’s the first time, I think, he’ll go to the TV and disallow for a normal position of the arm. I’m pretty sure Howard Webb tomorrow is going to appear in the media to explain why it’s not a penalty.”
Guardiola also referenced previous VAR controversies involving Manchester United, suggesting inconsistency in officiating decisions. He urged Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) chief Howard Webb to provide immediate clarification, adding: “Don’t wait until Wednesday, we have Champions League, we’re busy. Howard Webb, come tomorrow, explain why it’s not a penalty.”
While City celebrated returning to winning ways after a difficult week, Guardiola’s remarks ensured that the spotlight remained firmly on refereeing standards and VAR’s role in the Premier League.
