Flying Eagles did not have the dream start they hoped for at the FIFA U-20 World Cup, as they slumped to a 1–0 defeat to Norway in Group S
The tightly contested fixture saw both teams create chances, but it was Norway who made theirs count midway through a nine-minute penalty kick converted by Rasmus Holten. In what could have been a night of penalty kicks, Nigeria’s two appeal for penalty in the second half were overturned after reviews by VAR.
Nigeria, two-time runners-up at the tournament, fought hard for an equaliser but were let down by poor play by their forward players and a stout Norwegian defence.
Coach Aliyu Zubairu’s team started brightly but gradually lost control in midfield as Norway’s technical play and physical presence took effect. The result leaves Nigeria needing a positive outcome in their next group game to revive qualification hopes.
Norway, making their return to the U-20 World Cup after several years, now top the group temporarily with three points, while Nigeria will aim to bounce back in their next outing.
Both sides will return to action later this week as group-stage battles intensify in the chase for a place in the Round of 16.
Nigeria will face Saudi Arabia while Norway confront Colombia on Thursday.
Speaking after the game Norway head coach Bjorn Johansen, said it was vital the team got victory over Nigeria, who he admitted were difficult to break down
“Winning is very important, getting the three points. Every game is going to be fought until the end. Now we’ll play a final against Saudi Arabia. But three points in our debut, in a World Cup, is very important. We have to improve our game, but the structure is good and Nigeria is a very tough opponent”.
