Speaker of the Taraba State House of Assembly, John Bonzena, has left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Bonzena’s decamping took place on Monday, days before the planned defection of the state governor, Agbu Kefas, to the APC.
Also, other principal officers in the state’s legislature and all PDP members of the assembly joined the speaker.
In viral videos, the lawmakers were seen swapping their caps for those emblazoned with the insignia of President Bola Tinubu.
The legislators were also handed brooms — the symbol of the APC.
In a chat with journalists on Saturday, the governor formally announced that he will be leaving the PDP for the ruling party.
Kefas said the defection “has to do with the destiny of Taraba people”, and that he will be “expecting a lot of visitors” for the ceremony.
“There is going to be a major shift and alignment on November 19,” the governor said.
“I will officially transition from PDP to APC. It is a movement that has to do with the destiny of Taraba people.”
Kefas is the latest governor to trade the PDP for the APC in 2025.
Other governors who have defected from the PDP include Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom, Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta, Peter Mbah of Enugu, and Douye Diri of Bayelsa.
