Gunmen suspected to be bandits on Saturday, killed a woman and her six children in Kano, after breaking into a residential home.
The incident occurred at Darayi quarters in Kano municipal Local Government Area.
The victims were identified as Fatima Abubakar and her six children.
Neighbours raised the alarm after discovering the lifeless bodies, triggering panic and grief in the community.
The victims were evacuated from the scene and taken to the Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital in Kano, where medical personnel confirmed their deaths.
The Kano state police command said it received a distress call at about 12:10pm on January 17, 2025.
Abdullahi Kiyawa, police spokesperson in the state, said the commissioner of police ordered a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
Kiyawa said Wada Jarma, assistant commissioner of police in charge of the criminal investigation department, was directed to lead the probe.
He said the victims were assaulted with dangerous weapons after unknown gunmen invaded the house.
“Upon receiving the report, the commissioner of police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, immediately deployed a tactical police team to the scene,” Kiyawa said.
“The team was led by the deputy commissioner of police in charge of operations, DCP Lawal Isah Mani.”
Kiyawa said the command had extended condolences to the bereaved family and residents of the area while assuring the public of its commitment to justice.
