Adamu Abubakar, the first son of former Vice-President, Atiku Abubakar, has resigned from his position as Commissioner for Works and Energy Development in Adamawa State, following governor Ahmadu Fintiri’s decamping to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Abubakar announced his resignation in a letter dated March 2, 2026, addressed to the governor through the secretary to the state government (SSG).

He, however, did not state reasons for his resignation from the cabinet.

His resignation follows Fintiri’s recent defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress.

In a statement on Monday night, Abdulaziz Jauro, Personal Assistant and Media Aide to the former commissioner, said his principal thanked the governor “for the rare privilege and confidence bestowed upon him to serve in such a strategic capacity”.

Jauro said Abubakar described the opportunity as an “honour of immense significance” and pledged continued loyalty and support to the administration’s developmental vision.

“The former Commissioner also extended heartfelt appreciation to his father for granting him the moral support and blessing to serve the people of Adamawa State,” the statement reads.

“He commended the Permanent Secretaries of Works and Energy, the directors, engineers, and the entire staff of the ministry for their professionalism, resilience, and dedication to infrastructural advancement across the state.”

According to the statement, Abubakar also conveyed special appreciation to the people of Jada, his community, for their steadfast prayers, encouragement, and unwavering support throughout his tenure.

He emphasised that his resignation does not mark the end of his commitment to public service, but rather the beginning of new avenues for developmental collaboration.

The statement said Abubakar also reaffirmed his readiness to continue contributing meaningfully to the growth, unity, and progress of Adamawa state.

Last Friday, the state governor announced his formal defection to the APC in a statewide broadcast, saying members of his cabinet and the PDP in the state had moved with him to the ruling party.

In less than 24 hours afterwards, 22 commissioners and special advisers in the state announced their defection to the APC after dumping the PDP.
