The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has strongly dismissed an allegation by former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, that President Bola Tinubu is plotting to perpetuate himself in power under a “life presidency.”
In a statement issued on Monday, the party’s Publicity Secretary, Mogaji Seye Oladejo, described the comment as shameful and laughable, and an affront to Tinubu’s lifelong commitment to democratic principles.
Oladejo recalled the President’s notable role in Nigeria’s pro-democracy movement during the 1990s, particularly his active involvement in the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO).
He noted that Tinubu, at great personal risk, consistently opposed military dictatorship and fought for the restoration of civilian rule.
He said it was both “laughable and shameful” for anyone, especially El-Rufai, to question Tinubu’s democratic credentials, given his long-standing resistance to tenure elongation and his defence of constitutional order.
The Lagos APC stressed that Tinubu’s loyalty to Nigeria’s Constitution remains unwavering, adding that the nation’s democracy is safeguarded by constitutional term limits, robust institutions, and an established system of checks and balances.
