Wilfred Ndidi has officially been named the new Super Eagles of Nigeria captain on the eve of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The defensive midfielder takes over the reigns of steering the team forward following the retirement of William Troost-Ekong and Ahmed Musa, the two erstwhile captains of the senior men’s national team.

The 29-year-old Besiktas workhorse and vice-captain was named the national team captain on Friday after the team arrived in Morocco for the tournament and took its first training session.

Speaking with the team’s media, Ndidi revealed that he has consulted with senior squad members about his new role and requested the continued support of all staff to ensure a seamless transition.

“It’s a huge responsibility,” he said, adding that “with the help of the players, I think everything will go smoothly.

“I’ve had conversations with a couple of players, just some of the older players, to try to make them understand the reason why we’re here. We also need support from the staff. We’re all in this together.”

The Super Eagles failed to qualify or the 2026 World Cup following the continental playoffs loss, but Ndidi believes the AFCON tournament is another opportunity at redemption.

He added that the Eric Chelle-tutored team is ready to make its mark in the 35th edition of the competition.

“It was a sad one missing out on the World Cup, but this is another opportunity. Another day, another opportunity to correct the wrongs, put smiles on faces of Nigerians, and make the country proud once again,” he said.

“It’s not going to be an easy task, but we’re really up for it. We look forward to enjoying it together.”

Ndidi will lead the Super Eagles as the new captain in their first group match against Tanzania on December 23.
