Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has confirmed the enormity of pressure on the Federal Government over the spike in insecurity across the country.
On Wednesday, former Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Christopher Musa, who has been nominated for the office of Defence Minister, appeared before the senate for screening.
While senators asked Musa to “take a bow”, Akpabio disagreed with his colleagues, stressing the security challenge confronting the nation, adding that though the nominee seems to enjoy overwhelming support from Nigerians, it was important to hear how he would work with the various security agencies to steady the tide.
“I would love to ask him questions at a time like this, if we come here and we do politics, politics of bow and go, this is not a period we should bow and go,” he stated.
“Even Donald Trump is on our neck, we have not yet asked him what his response is to Donald Trump, the president of America. He (Musa) is not just anybody. Chief of defence staff, a nominee of the defence minister of a country and you stood and said he should take a bow and go?
“With so many questions on the mouth of Nigerians, with over 200 Nigerian children in the bush kidnapped and being tortured. His appointment is heralded all over Nigeria because Nigerians believe he has something to offer. Give the man opportunity to give Nigerians hope.”
On Monday, former defence minister, Mohammed Badaru, resigned his position on “health grounds”, although there were rumours that he was fired by President Bola Tinubu.
His exit gave Musa, who was recently replaced by Tinubu as the CDS, the opportunity to be nominated for the position.
