Factional chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Kabiru Turaki, has called US President, Donald Trump, and the International Community to come and rescue Nigeria’s democracy.
Turaki, a senior advocate, made the call on Tuesday, following the drama that played out at the PDP headquarters, Wadata Plaza in Abuja.
The factional PDP chairman, who was elected over the weekend at the party’s National Convention in Ibadan, Oyo State, had he addressed party members and the media inside the plaza.
However, hell was said to have broken loose after suspected thugs said to be armed, invaded the area, forcing police to shoot teargas to disperse what was perceived as a hostile crowd.
Bauchi State governor and Chairman of PDP Governors Forum, Bala Mohammed, had blocked Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike, who is the leader of the other PDP faction, from gaining access into Wadata Plaza.
Addressing newsmen outside of the building, Turaki said Nigeria’s democracy is in danger and urged for help from developed countries.
“I want to call on President Trump, what is at stake is not just genocide against Nigerian Christians, he should come and save Democracy in Nigeria. Democracy is under threat, I’m calling on all other nations, all advanced democracies to come and save Nigeria, to come and save democracy,” he stated.
“I cannot understand how a serving minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria will be leading thugs, armed thugs, with the active connivance of the police, to come and create mayhem here. I have said it, we are willing to lay down our lives to protect our office, to protect our democracy, to protect our mandate. Nigerians, you are watching what is happening, international community, you are seeing the danger Nigeria democracy is in. Come and save us, come and save us.”
