Despite ongoing talks with the federal government, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Sunday, commenced a two-week  complete warning strike across all public universities in the country.

Announcing the start of the strike during a news briefing at the University of Abuja, National President of the Union, Prof. Chris Piwuna said the association was forced to take the action due to the attitude of the Nigerian government to the plight of the lecturers.

“Compatriots of the press, it goes without saying that there is nothing sufficient on ground to stop the implementation of the ASUU-NEC’s resolution to embark on a two-week warning strike at the expiry of the 14-day notice given on the 28th September 2025,” Piwuna stated.

He directed all ASUU branches to withdraw their services effective midnight, Monday, October 13, 2025, adding that the strike would be “total and comprehensive” as agreed at the last National Executive Council (NEC) meeting.

The declaration comes despite ongoing negotiations between the union and the Federal Government aimed at preventing a fresh disruption in academic activities across the country’s tertiary institutions.

Last Wednesday, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, disclosed that the government had entered the last last of talks with ASUU and other university-based unions to settle outstanding issues relating to welfare, funding, and the implementation of the 2009 ASUU-FGN Agreement.
