In a bold and inspiring move to promote personal development, workplace ethics, and societal values, the Lagos chapter of the Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices (POCACOV) has partnered with Checkers Limited to conduct a transformative training session for the company’s members of staff.

The training, Themed, “Securing Lives, Securing Business: Partnership for Safer Future”, which was held at Checkers headquarters office in Mushin, Lagos, brought together leading voices in human capital development, security matters and ethical leadership. Notable among them were Pastor Richard Minet, a respected human capital developer,, SP Olivia Ugochukwu, who is the Lagos coordinator of POCACOV and Dr. Moses Oladimeji, Lagos State Chairman of POCACOV.

SP Ugochukwu and Pastor Minet delivered powerful sessions aimed at equipping the employees with the knowledge, mindset, and tools to become agents of positive change within their organization and in the broader society.

A key highlight of the event was Pastor Minet’s unique approach to communication. Emphasizing the importance of authenticity and relatability, he explained the strategy of “using their language”, incorporating slang and expressions familiar to the audience, to effectively pass across important messages.

According to Pastor Minet, the key to effective communication is to “use their language” and “be as real as possible” when conveying messages to young people. “We discover that you need to know how to drive your message and teach in a manner that the people can buy it,” he explained.

“So, what we have done is that we used their languages to communicate to them, like some of their slangs that they can relate with.”

This approach, he said, makes it easier for people to open up and receive the message.

The session delved into several essential themes, including authority,
self-development, and the principle of “see something, say something.”

Pastor Minet noted the challenge of dealing with a generation often resistant to authority, but stressed that understanding and respecting leadership structures is key to personal and organizational success.

“We talked about how today’s generation often pushes back on authority,” he said.

“But understanding and submitting to rightful authority is not about suppression, it’s about structure, growth, and accountability.”

SP Olivia Ugochukwu dishing out rules and guidelines

In her session, SP Ugochukwu urged the employees of Checkers to shun acts capable of leading to f rraud and in turn putting them on the wrong side of the law. She informed the members of Staff of Checkers to be diligent, dutiful and disciplined in the discharge of their duties in the workplace.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the training session, POCACOV Lagos Chapter, Moses Oladimeji expanded on the theme, by emphasizing the importance of integrity in all spheres of life, especially in the workplace. He highlighted how integrity plays a decisive role in staff development and appointments.

“Standing for what is right, that is integrity. It is not just a virtue, it is a requirement for growth, trust, and lasting impact within an organization”, said Oladimeji.

The session also encouraged staff to be bold and proactive in addressing misconduct, both within and outside the organization.

“If you see something wrong, you must say something,” Pastor Minet said. “Allowing evil to thrive through silence only weakens the moral foundation of any institution.”

Oladimeji reinforced this by challenging participants to be vigilant and conscious of their actions at all times.

“Even when no one is watching, we must remember that our choices matter. There is always someone above who sees all. That consciousness should guide how we live and work,” he stated.

Beyond the training, both POCACOV and Checkers Limited expressed optimism about future collaborations. Oladimeji revealed plans to extend the empowerment sessions to other companies, schools, and communities, as part of a broader initiative to curb cultism, moral decay, and youth involvement in vices.

Sir Abimbola Ogunyemi of POCACOV

“We are committed to reaching out to secondary schools and engaging young minds early,” he said.

“By catching them young, we can instill the right values and steer them away from destructive influences.”

The collaboration between POCACOV and Checkers Limited stands as a shining example of how partnerships between public initiatives and private enterprises can foster meaningful change. It sends a clear message that developing people, not just in skill but in character is the cornerstone of sustainable growth and progress.

“Self-development is about becoming a stakeholder in your growth,” Pastor Minet concluded.

“Programmes like this are seeds of transformation. I encourage other companies to join hands with POCACOV in building a better, value-driven society.”

Summing it up, Deji Adekunle, Operations Manager of Checkers Africa Limited, noted that the collaboration with POCACOV was a welcome development that has left a lasting impression on Checkers members of staff.

“This is more like an eye-opener, and we are delighted that POCACOV had this collaboration with Checkers Africa Limited. We are so grateful because most of our workers and the attendees were so thrilled and excited that they could learn something new.”
