Abia State governor, Alex Otti, has hinted that he could leave the Labour Party, the platform under which he campaigned in the 2023 elections.
Otti, who spoke amid mass defections by opposition governors to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), said he would run again under the Labour Party but added that “nobody knows tomorrow.”
The governor said this on Thursday during his monthly media interaction, where he responded to questions on the leadership crisis within the LP.
“We are on the right side. We have maintained that Abure’s tenure has expired, and we went to court, which affirmed that,” Otti said.
“So, the court judgement confirmed that his tenure has expired and advised people to obey court decisions to save the courts from unnecessary troubles.
“We are not in an election period. If an election comes, we will still run under the Labour Party, but nobody knows tomorrow. But today, I am still in the Labour Party.”
Last week, the federal high court in Abuja ruled that the Nenadi Usman-led national caretaker committee of the LP is the authentic leadership of the party — the faction to which the Abia governor belongs.
Peter Lifu, the presiding judge, also directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognise the Usman-led wing of the party.
However, the rival faction led by Julius Abure said it would appeal the judgement.
