Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong on Tuesday night, confirmed that he and his teammates did not participate in training on Tuesday, over years of unpaid match bonuses by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
On Monday, players and officials boycotted training over unpaid match bonuses. The players are owed bonuses for both the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaigns. Despite participating in multiple matches across both competitions, they have only received a $1,000 appearance fee per game, and even that was withheld for last month’s fixtures against Lesotho and Benin, despite confirmation that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) had received the funds, Score Nigeria reports. Sources within the camp say frustration has reached boiling point, with players and officials united in their demand for accountability.
NFF president Ibrahim Gusau met privately with the squad in Morocco in an attempt to calm tensions, but officials were notably excluded from the talks.
Troost-Ekong, who on X confirmed the development via his handled, quoted an earlier post by Nigerian football journalist, Oluwashina Okeleji.
He wrote: “Once resolution is found, we will be the first to confirm. Any other statement/claim or especially demands other than the rightful request written about below is FALSE. All we want and continue to do is focus on the big games ahead.”
